Earliest meeting: Thursday 10th July 1817 Final meeting: Tuesday 30th June 1864 The Kent village of Lamberhurst today has a population of barely 1500 and lies in the valley of the River Teise, a tributary of the River Medway. In Roman times the area was famous for its connection with the iron industry, but much later the village held a series of races, although the quality of runners was inferior and crowds were sparse. The first record of a meeting was on Thursday 10th July 1817 when an unfortunate fatal incident caused Mr Dawson’s filly to fall, killing jockey W. Boynton. The next meeting where results were reported was on Wednesday 18th December 1839 on grassland on the edge of the village. It was then a further 25 years before racing was mentioned again in the village. A Match took place over fair racing ground on the outskirts of Lamberhurst between Mr Thomas Barton and Mr James Cheney. It resulted in an easy win for Mr Cheney riding Pretty Poll.
